Jumping Creek Road

Jumping Creek Road is an important local link road that carries more than 8,100 vehicles per day, with the traffic volume expected to double to 15,000 vehicles per day by 2035.

Jumping Creek Road connects Ringwood-Warrandyte Road in Warrandyte to Homestead Road in Wonga Park, as well as surrounding suburbs and the tourist destinations of the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges.

Between January 2009 and December 2013, a total of 17 crashes resulting in casualties were reported at Jumping Creek Road, including one fatal crash.

The Jumping Creek Road upgrade will deliver safe, sustainable, functional and site responsive infrastructure that protects and enhances the local landscape.

Jumping Creek Road Community Reference Panel

In January 2017, Council established a Jumping Creek Road Community Reference Panel, which consists of both residents and relevant local business and community group representatives.

The panel is an opportunity for Council to provide updates, highlight issues, respond to queries and share ideas with the community and to receive feedback on proposals about the design and reconstruction of Jumping Creek Road.

The panel also considers issues previously raised by the community during the consultation process for the Jumping Creek Road Development Framework.

Following our previous communication, we held four public information sessions in March 2023. The sessions were very successful, and we had a number of residents, business owners and road users attending the sessions. We appreciate the time you spared to come to the sessions. These sessions provided an opportunity for the public to not only become aware of the outcome of numerous events and sessions held before leading us to get to this point but also be informed about the Council plan on how the project construction phase would progress and be executed.

During the sessions, we received a few queries asking for another afternoon session to be held, providing an opportunity to the public who were not able to join us in the March events. We are delighted to inform you that we have organised another session to be held on May 16th at Wonga Hall between 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Details of the session can be found here: Your Say Manningham Letter/Public Session

Also, we are pleased to inform you that the wildlife protection netting installation is completed, and wildlife monitoring devices are coming next. In addition, the planting between the Warrandyte roundabout and Nelson Drive Northern side is completed. Also, preparation of the Southern side of this section is completed, and planting is planned for the next planting season. While we are focusing on the current works, it was not forgotten that trees had been removed a few years back while constructing the bridge. At the time of bridge construction, the seed had been taken from native and indigenous trees and grown in the Friends of Warrandyte State Park Nursery. The number of 300 grown-up trees had been planted around the bridge in August 2022 to cover the loss.

Furthermore, the footpath from Warrandyte roundabout to Nelson Drive has been reconstructed to address the public concern regarding the effects of the footpath constructed as part of stage 01 works. The footpath works will be continued with the next stages of construction planned to be started in the second quarter of 2023.

Public drop-in information sessions are planned to be held from the 20/03/23 till the 23/03/23 and will allow anyone interested to provide further feedback and or information on the project. Details of the session can be found here: Your Say Manningham Letter/Public Sessions

We aim to make our beautiful Jumping Creek Road safe for road users and more attractive for visitors to encourage their travels and support the local businesses and economy.

The Jumping Creek Road Design Proposal was endorsed by Council on 26 April 2022.

We developed a concept plan for the project and asked for feedback from community during October 2021.

Community feedback helped guide the design and make sure there are minimal impacts on the character of the area.

    The design proposal includes:

    • Upgrading the Wonga Park Township intersection with traffic lights (Dudley Road and Jumping Creek Road).
    • Installation of an underground drainage system including kerb and channel for the entire road.
    • New roundabouts at Hooper and Hartley Roads.
    • A recreational trail on the northern side of the road.
    • Extensive revegetation along the entire Jumping Creek Road corridor.
    • Installations of aerial and wildlife crossings to protect wildlife.

Jumping Creek Road has a historically high levels of crashes, including 17 resulting in casualties and one fatal crash between 2009 and 2013.

We believe the upgrade is vital to improve safety for many of our community who use the road to travel to home, work, school and social connections.

The road carries more than 8,100 vehicles per day, with the traffic volume expected to increase to 15,000 vehicles per day by 2035.

    When does the upgrade begin?

We completed the first section of the road upgrade between Ringwood-Warrandyte Road and Nelson Drive in Warrandyte in 2020.

The next phase of major works are expected to begin in early 2023, with some early beginning in late 2022.

The first stage of works is now nearing completion on Jumping Creek Road.

Due to some weather delays and challenges due to the current stage four COVID-19 restrictions, works are currently scheduled to be complete in mid-September 2020 with the road opening to through-traffic soon after.

All excavation works, the relocation of underground services and underground drainage have been completed as has the installation of kerb and channel between Ringwood-Warrandyte Road and Nelson Drive.

The focus over the next couple of weeks will be asphalting the road surface and completing the footpaths along this stretch of road.

Construction works on Jumping Creek Road are being completed in accordance with the Victorian Government’s stage four coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions currently in place for metropolitan Melbourne.

Thank you to everyone for your patience as we complete these works and road detours are in place. We look forward to re-opening Jumping Creek Road once the upgrade works are complete.

Works on stage one of the upgrade of Jumping Creek Road are progressing with construction underway between Ringwood-Warrandyte Road and Nelson Drive in Warrandyte

Since construction started in mid-April works have included re-levelling the road area, which will help to improve sightlines and safety along this section of road.

Excavation works are now nearly completed and many underground services have been relocated.

Works to install new underground drainage pipes are about half way through. We have installed 50 per cent of the kerb and channel and will soon start works on the retaining walls along the side of the road before laying the asphalt.

Works are on track to be completed by the end of August 2020.
