Claire is a local Year 12 student and a member of our Manningham Youth Advisory Committee. Like others her age, she has struggled to access headspace services for several reasons and is a strong advocate for a headspace in Manningham.
“Having a local headspace would make seeking help so much easier!”
Since 2020, Claire has met with the Mayor of Manningham, Keith Wolohan MP, and the CEO of Manningham Council to share her story and call for an accessible headspace location for young Manningham residents.
👏 Thank you, Claire, and everyone else who shared their story with us through our #manninghamneedsheadspace campaign!

#manninghamneedsheadspace campaign results
Share #manninghamneedsheadspace campaign results on Facebook Share #manninghamneedsheadspace campaign results on Twitter Share #manninghamneedsheadspace campaign results on Linkedin Email #manninghamneedsheadspace campaign results linkWe are pleased to share that we raised awareness for our lack of headspace youth mental health services to over 50,000 people. We achieved over 24,000 impressions via our Instagram campaign and distributed over 1,000 campaign brochures. We also held nine pop-up information stalls around Manningham and gathered your thoughts using surveys, polls, social media, Your Say, and ideas boards.
We received feedback from over 1,000 young people, their parents, and other supporters who told us why they desperately need a headspace service located right here in Manningham. One young resident said, “There’s already enough difficulty getting help for young people, for [headspace] to be easily accessible means there’s less resistance for us to get help”.
Through our campaign activities, we discovered the top three reasons for why our community needs a local headspace:
- To provide our young people with additional mental health support.
- To make accessing youth mental health services easier via public transport.
- To offer our young people more affordable options (headspace services are free and low-cost).
We’ve listened to your personal stories and understand the challenges associated with accessing youth mental health services. We’ll be taking this information directly to the government as we continue to advocate for better health outcomes for our young people.
Keep an eye out for our youth mental health advocacy fact sheet which will be shortly released on this page.
Thank you to everyone who got involved!

Manningham is a missing space on the map for headspace services
Share Manningham is a missing space on the map for headspace services on Facebook Share Manningham is a missing space on the map for headspace services on Twitter Share Manningham is a missing space on the map for headspace services on Linkedin Email Manningham is a missing space on the map for headspace services linkWe need to put a headspace on the map in Manningham.
If young people wish to access headspace at locations outside of Manningham, they face travel times of up to 80 minutes via bus and train.
Young people travelling from the more isolated suburbs of Manningham (Park Orchards, Ringwood North, Warrandyte South and Wonga Park) need to utilise multiple connecting bus routes to access their nearest service (1). All public transport routes involve walking between bus/train stops, interchanges and the services. This is a further barrier to access mental health care for young people with a disability.
Additionally, travel times from the more isolated suburbs mean that they would only be able to access their nearest service within their operating hours on some (not all) days of the week. Young people are further limited in the number of appointments available to be booked, and often there is no way that a young person could reach a headspace service after school.
Many young people prefer to seek mental health support without the knowledge of their parents. Being able to access services through public transport without being driven to the appointments by parents is critical to better health outcomes.
As young people cannot easily access the existing youth mental health services, they face poorer outcomes including failing to complete school, under/unemployment, partaking in self-harm, or suicide (2,3).
