Following community consultation in August 2024, we’ve finalised the design for the Northern Oval upgrade at Warrandyte Reserve.
The final design includes:
relocation of the new shelter to the eastern side of the oval, opposite the tennis court car park, to protect significant trees and improve access to existing paths and amenities
installation of a new 1.5 metre-wide concrete footpath to help manage erosion on the steep terrain
replacement of the existing timber retaining wall with a more robust mudstone rock wall
new garden beds featuring indigenous trees and plants around the new path areas
new bollards along the northern edge of the car park to enhance pedestrian safety.
Construction will begin in late 2025 and is expected to be completed in early May 2026.
Why is this happening?
These improvements will provide improved infrastructure for the whole community, including dogs and their owners. The Warrandyte Reserve infrastructure upgrade is supported by the Victorian Government through the New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the proposed upgrade at Warrandyte Reserve northern oval.
Your feedback and ideas will help inform the final designs for this reserve.
Summary of key findings:
Most people who completed the survey use the reserve very often and regularly. While the survey respondents use the northern oval primarily for dog walking, it is also used intensively for sport, informal exercise and play, particularly with children.
56% of respondents support the proposal and the project will continue.
An improvement to the grounds and drainage is broadly supported. The new shelter is equally important to respondents as well as other supplementary infrastructure to improve the amenity of the northern oval.
Concerns have been raised about the issue of visitors not picking up after their dogs, which can compromise the usability of the grounds, particularly for junior sports.
Some great ideas were shared on how the plan could be improved. They will all be considered and assessed against site restrictions and funding availability as we develop the final plan.
Next steps
We will finalise the concept plan based on the feedback received.
We will provide an update on the project progress in mid-2025.
