We're naming the unnamed laneway between Robert and Helene Streets in Bulleen. The new laneway will address two new properties created from the subdivision of land at 48 Templestowe Road in Bulleen.

Update August 2024: Our second consultation closed on Friday 16 August 2024. Read about the consultation outcomes.

We recently held two public consultations to propose a name that recognises the area’s brickmaking past. The former Bulleen Brickworks was located nearby on Templestowe Road, which contained two large kilns and chimneys.

Our initial proposal was to name the laneway ‘Kiln Lane’. After receiving valuable community feedback, we decided not to proceed with the name Kiln Lane. This, in part, was due to some concerns raised regarding the difficulty in spelling and correctly hearing the word Kiln, particularly over the phone.

Our second consultation proposed a new name for the laneway, 'Brickmakers Lane'. The community suggested this name during the first consultation, and it maintains ties to the area’s brickmaking past. 'Brickmakers Lane' complies with Victoria's naming rules for places.

Our second public consultation on the naming of the unnamed laneway in Bulleen has now concluded. We are delighted with the continued interest in the project, as we received five submissions during this consultation.

Of the five responses, one opposed the proposed name, one supported it, and three offered alternative suggestions without direct feedback on the proposed name. After carefully considering this feedback, we have decided to proceed with the proposal to name the laneway Brickmakers Lane.

We will now progress through our internal decision-making process and present the name to the Council for endorsement. Following Council endorsement, we will submit the name to Geographic Names Victoria for final approval.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the consultation process.

We’re proposing to name the laneway ‘Kiln Lane’, in recognition of the area’s brickmaking past – previously home to the Bulleen Brickworks, located nearby on Templestowe Road. Established by Glen Iris Bricks in the 1950s, the brickworks was taken over by Boral Bricks in 1970 before closing down in the late 1900s.

Complete our feedback form by 5.00pm on Friday 7 June 2024.

The name ‘Kiln Lane’ complies with Victoria's naming rules for places.
