This is computer generated image of the Ayr Street South shops, showing what it will look like when upgraded with a cyclist in the foreground and people sitting and chatting at new outdoor seating. It shows car parking at the front of the shops. There is an accessible parking space.

Placemaking is a process by which we shape our public realm by inspiring people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as a place for the community to enjoy and feel welcome.

Ayr Street South is a small activity centre in Doncaster that we are upgrading as part of our Placemaking program. The motivation for the upgrade came from a local trader, interested in revitalising the shopping strip. The upgrade involves landscaping and greening to improve community connections and accessibility to support our local businesses within Ayr Street South.

There are a number of constraints associated with the site including a steep gradient in some parts, proximity to a corner roundabout and an accessibility car park that needs to be updated to meet standards. After detailed discussions with traders, we collected broader community input on a concept plan to upgrade the centre.

Key elements of the proposed upgrade include:

  • a public seating area to support outdoor dining at the café
  • additional trees and planter boxes for shade and aesthetics
  • improvements to the fence with modern materials
  • new public seating bench
  • parking lines to improve parking opportunities in the side street (near Reserve)
  • paint and clean-up of the area
  • community public art project (to be led by a professional artist)
  • upgrade of accessibility car park and walkways to improve access for all (no loss of parking places)
  • bicycle hoops

We thank you for your ideas and feedback on this proposal. Please tell us what you think, and if you'd like to be involved in the in the community arts project.

Thanks to the Ayr Street community and local traders for helping to shape this upgrade project.

In summary we undertook the following:

    • Hard copy of concept plan (1) to all traders
    • A facilitated meeting with Manningham urban planners and some traders on the first concept plan
    • Distribution of amended concept plan (2) to all traders and follow-up informal discussions
    • Signage with concept plan (2) in local shops
    • A flyer letterbox dropped to every residence within a 200 metre radius with concept plan (2) and an invite to have their say with further information including a survey instrument and discussion forum
    • Promotion at the local bowling club and discussion with management

Based on the very positive feedback, it is clear the Ayr Street South Upgrade Concept Plan has strong support in its current form. Improvements that have been incorporated into the final project plan as a result of engagement are:

    1. Hand rails on stairs
    2. Retaining trees – with root protectors
    3. Keep the Loading Zone on the upper level
    4. Maintain number of car parks on the upper level
    5. Include bike racks and rubbish bins

There are ongoing discussions with some residents and traders about traffic safety and parking time limits. We are still discussing the Arts project scope and more suggestions are always welcome.

In April, the entire shopping strip was cleaned with a high pressure hose. Now we are ready to start with some work on fencing. Works are set to begin from Friday 18th June! Construction is scheduled to be finished within a month.

Final plans are saved in the Documents section.
