Wombat Bend Playground is a much-loved regional destination, catering to visitors of all abilities. Created by the community, for the community, it embraces inclusive design that support creativity, inspiration and imaginative play.

What is happening?

We’re planning an upgrade to Wombat Bend Playground and asking community to share what they love most about the playground and how it can be improved.

The upgrade focuses on minor enhancements to existing play and park facilities, including replacing equipment that is no longer fit for purpose, including:

  • selective upgrades to play equipment that show signs of wear
  • new play elements
  • minor improvements to the picnic area next to the playground
  • upgrades to furniture and paths
  • a review and potential upgrade of exercise equipment and its location.

Carparking improvements, toilet works and a major playground redevelopment are not part of this project.

This project supports Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo (Yarra Strategic Plan) 2022-2032, which aims to protect the health of the Birrarung (Yarra River) and its surrounding environment, while improving parkland and recreational opportunities to support community wellbeing.

Where is it?

Wombat Bend Playground is located at 2-4 Duncan Street, Templestowe Lower.

When is it happening?

Thank you to everyone who contributed feedback during each consultation stage in 2024 and 2025. Community consultation has now closed, and the final design is available to view.

  • The first round of community consultation ran from 14 November to 12 December 2024, including an onsite session on 8 December 2024. This helped us understand the community's priorities and aspirations for the site.

  • The second round of consultation on the draft concept plan closed on Monday 2 June 2025. Feedback from this stage helped shape the final design.

Final design (subject to Cultural Heritage Management Plan)

How will the works affect me?

Construction is planned to begin in early 2027, subject to weather conditions, contractor availability and approval of the Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP).

During construction the playground will be temporarily closed.

  • The nearest alternative playground is Bimbadeen Reserve, located 700 metres away on the corner of Templestowe Road and Airds Road.
  • Other regional playgrounds are available at Ruffey Lake Park (Victoria Street) and wonguim wilam (Warrandyte River Reserve).

We’ll make every effort to minimise disruption to residents and visitors during these works.
