Wombat Bend Playground is a much-loved regional playground catering to visitors of all abilities, created by the community, for the community. It embraces inclusive design to foster creative development, inspiration and imagination and to encourage the mind to explore.

What is happening?

We’re planning an upgrade to Wombat Bend Playground and asking community to share what they love most about the playground, and how can we make it even better.

We’re planning some minor enhancements to play items and existing picnic facilities, as well as replacing play equipment that is no longer fit for purpose.

The upgrade will include:

  • selective upgrades to play equipment that show signs of wear
  • new play pieces
  • minor improvements to the picnic area adjacent to the playground
  • furniture and path improvements
  • review and potential upgrade of exercise equipment and location

Carparking improvements, toilet building works and a major playground upgrade are not part of this project.

This project supports Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo (Yarra Strategic Plan) 2022-2032, which aims to protect the health of the Birrarung (Yarra River) and its lands. It also aims to improve parkland and recreational opportunities to support community wellbeing.

Where is it?

Wombat Bend Playground is located on Duncan Street in Templestowe Lower.

When is it happening?

The first round of community consultation will be open from 14 November to 12 December 2024. An onsite consultation will be held from 10.30am to 12.00pm on 8 December 2024.

A second round of community consultation will likely commence in March 2025. We will be seeking feedback on the draft concept plan, which will be developed based on feedback received as part of the first round of consultation.

We anticipate the final design will be ready by July 2025, with construction to commence in February 2026. This schedule is subject to weather and contractor availability.

How will the works affect me?

The playground will be closed during construction.

The nearest alternative playground is Bimbadeen Reserve, 700 metres away at the corner of Templestowe Road and Airds Road.

Alternate Regional playgrounds can be found at Ruffey Lake Park (Victoria Street) and wonguim wilam (Warrandyte River Reserve).

We will make every effort to minimise any disruption to residents and visitors.
