To demonstrate the possibilities of a public plaza space, the roadway was temporarily closed to traffic for two weeks from Monday 7 March to Monday 21 March and a community event was held on Saturday 12 March.
The community event was well attended with visitors enjoying a free barbecue and family fun with face painting, a balloon artist and more in the temporary public plaza space. Council officers were also there to discuss the potential permanent road closure.
Manningham Council is inviting submissions from the community on the potential closure of the road formerly known as Shaw Street at Tunstall Square in Doncaster East to create a public plaza area at the shopping centre. A copy of the plan showing the affected road area is included in the document library on this page.
The potential closure is an action of the Tunstall Square Structure Plan 2015 and aims to provide an open space area and opportunity for people to meet and congregate within the shopping centre.
At the Council meeting of 15 December 2015, Council resolved to:
Commence the statutory process for closing the roadway in the Tunstall Square Activity Centre, between Beverley Street and the Tunstall Square west car park, to traffic, and, as an adjunct to this process.
Temporarily close the subject section of road for a period of two weeks, for the purposes of community engagement regarding the development of the proposed public plaza, should Council ultimately resolve that way.
