About Placemaking 

Placemaking helps us to re-imagine and reinvent our public spaces in Manningham. 

We want to hear about what you, our community, value about your local neighbourhoods and precincts, and your ideas for making them great places to connect, have fun, do business and feel good about being together and being safe.

To do this well, we need you to tell us what you want to see, experience and enjoy so that we can support you in making your place better.

Placemaking opportunities at the Civic Precinct

The Civic Precinct includes: 

  • MC2 and the Civic Centre and surrounding areas, including the car park and the Doncaster Hill Community Garden
  • the shopping strip around Schramm’s Lane (across Doncaster Road from MC2)
  • the underground pedestrian way under Doncaster Road
  • the small strip of shops below JJ Tulley Drive.

It is an area that has a large worker presence, surrounding high density residential development, valued green space and outdoor areas, and a number of service organisations and public facilities, small businesses, restaurants and cafes. 

How can we make the Civic Precinct a better place?

We would like to help activate this space to support all these users and build community and vibrancy around our Civic Precinct. It may be through quite small and simple ideas (like Spoonville), or through larger projects (like creating more outdoor dining opportunities).

    Let's put it this way. we are all in a unique position created by this pandemic. We really want everyone to enjoy being outdoors, especially as we head into longer days and warmer weather. We want to create a space with you to make it inviting and fun for you, your family, friends and colleagues.

    We are really open to your suggestions, maybe you have seen something somewhere that stuck with you. Imagine we can do that here for you?

    New artwork including painting on the cement with interactive art for kids such as snakes & ladders or hopscotch, along with a trail of artwork to lead people around the side of the MC Square building perhaps or even into the pedestrian tunnel where you can experience something sensory.

    There are so many suggestions for activities such as makers’ markets, multi-cultural food sharing events, recycled fashion shows, even clothes swaps even a massive chessboard..

    What are some of your ideas for more permanent structures like telescopes or what about a large blackboard for kids to express their chalk skills maybe it's something else with an educational spin. An area for kids to play, what would that look like? have you seen something done well that your kids would love to use? What about a gazebo with bbq facilities so we can enjoy more outdoor dining opportunities together.

    We would love to hear ideas and recommendations to improve our connections with our community garden, do we need more signage, more plants and flowers, what about a natural green screen for a secluded hideaway.

    Manningham met with MC Square tenants and from the discussion, some fantastic ideas were mentioned that could definitely breathe new life into our Civic Precinct.

    We heard that regular users love the area and value the huge amount of potential it could bring to the precinct.

    MC Square plaza is a great flat space and is currently used for Tai Chi / exercise, roller-skating/blading, family walks and visiting kids who enjoy riding their scooters through the space.

    The quiet rear side offers an escape where one can get away from the traffic with a nice outlook of trees, taking away the concrete jungle feel. The green spaces are valued and the grass area is well used. The outdoor art softens the concrete area. The easy accessible parking allows for a low stress visit.
