FAQs
What is a mountain bike flow trail?
It is a freestyle dirt trail that utilises gravity and pumping rather than pedallng to descend. There will be 3 descending (downhill) trails of about 240 metres each, graded to provide safe, fun experiences for different abilities to experience features such as rollers, berms, jumps and improve technical skills. There will be one ascending (uphill) trail with an easy gradient.
What type of bike can I use?
The trails will be suitable for all types of mountain bike and bmx. They are not suitable for road or hybrid bikes. Legal electric mountain bikes can also be used.
What will be the surface of the trails?
The trail will be dirt with a few artificial features using timber, rocks or fiberglass decking.
How can I get to the trails?
There is good access off the Main Yarra Trail, Diamond Creek Trail as well as bike paths along both sides of Fitzsimons Lane. The new trails connect directly into the existing single track trails in Candlebark Park. Car parking is available in the reserve or at Westerfolds Park.
What other facilities will be available?
There is already a bike repair station, picnic table and seats in the reserve, more seating will be added. There are toilets and drinking water in Westerfolds Park close by.
How will the natural environment and amenity be protected?
The trails will be professional designed and constructed by one of Australia’s leading trail companies to ensure there is minimal impact on the environment. They will also be maintaining the site to ensure it stays safe and avoids any soil run-off.
What area will the trails use?
The footprint of the trails is being kept as compact as possible under the powerlines which is an area that cannot be used for tree planting and only has low value grass cover. No additional planting is planned around the trails but extensive tree planting is underway in other areas of the reserve.
How will other users of the reserve be accommodated safely?
The majority of the reserve will be available at all times for walkers, runners and dogs (off-lead under effective control). There will be clear signage at all the entrance points to indicate park regulations and appropriate behaviours. There will be specific signage for users of the mountain bike trails. Where required trails will be designated as bike only or shared use.
When will works begin?
Construction is expected to start in February 2026 and take around 2 months to complete. This includes the construction of the mountain bike flow trails, canoe launch (delivered by Melbourne Water) new signs, car parking and seating. Tree planting will take place mid-2026.
