Why is Council closing the road?

Council’s decision to officially close the road formerly known as Shaw Street at Tunstall Square was made in May 2016 to allow the creation of a public plaza within the shopping centre. This decision followed extensive community consultation.

Closing the road is a key action in the Tunstall Square Structure Plan, which was adopted in 2015, and identified a need for more open space areas within the shopping centre for people to gather and meet.

The closure of the roadway will allow the creation of this open space in the form of a public plaza, and Council is now seeking feedback on the design, look and feel of the public plaza area.

What will the public plaza look like?

The public plaza will be created as a community space for people to meet and enjoy. The proposed concept plan provides an idea of what the space will look like including the key features.

Will the public plaza provide additional space for footpath trading?

The road is being closed to create a public plaza within Tunstall Square, this will be an additional open space for people to gather, meet and congregate the area.

The road closure will therefore not provide any additional footpath trading space for businesses. Current outdoor dining areas in the vicinity of the road will not be extended.

What can I make comment on?

You are encouraged to let us know what you think of the proposed design as shown in the concept plan, including the key features, which include:

    • New street trees and planting to enrich the laneway space and create a shade canopy in summer
    • Retaining a number of existing trees within the space
    • Incorporating sculptural elements into the new spac
    • A range of seating option
    • A combination of bluestone paving, asphalt and exposed aggregate concrete pavement surfaces.

It is important to note that the proposed design has been developed taking into consideration:

    • Necessary allowance for emergency vehicle access
    • The portion of the precinct covered by shop awnings
    • Areas within the precinct that are currently used for footpath trading, most of which use cafe screens
    • Drainage and electrical services including an existing electricity box at northern end of Shaw Street that is not able to be relocated.
