What is the Manningham Recreation Strategy?

The Recreation Strategy will guide the future provision of community-based sport, active recreation and active living opportunities throughout Manningham, in response to our vision for a healthy and more active community.

    This Strategy will aim to:

    • Develop a road map for sport, recreation and active living, in Manningham.
    • Further support inclusive, accessible, and flexible opportunities for all community members.
    • Identify barriers to participation and opportunities to increase physical activity levels.
    • Improve our focus on increasing participation, health, and wellbeing outcomes.
    • Guide investment in required infrastructure, programs, and services over the next 10 years.

Why do we need a new Recreation Strategy?

Since we adopted our first Recreation Strategy, Active for Life, in 2010 (and reviewed it in 2019), we have made good progress in supporting active lifestyles and organised sport.

Our new Recreation Strategy will continue to support active lifestyles and organised sport, while placing a stronger focus on active recreation. The aim is to find new ways to encourage more people to participate, especially groups in Manningham who are currently less active or underrepresented. The Strategy will respond to changing participation trends by making the best use of existing recreation facilities and guiding future investment in recreation opportunities that are accessible, flexible and inclusive, helping to create a healthier and more active community.

More Australians are choosing activities that can fit around their work and family lives. Active recreation is a good option for people of all ages and abilities because it makes it easier to be physically active every day.

What are the different types of physical activity?

    • Active living: Incorporating physical activity in our daily lives. This includes incidental activities such as gardening, walking or cycling for travel, and household chores.
    • Active recreation: Physical activities that are non-competitive. This includes informal or leisure activities such as swimming, gym and fitness classes, walking or cycling for fitness, and other social or casual sport. This will be the main focus of the Recreation Strategy.
    • Organised sport: Competitive sporting or physical activity that is sometimes run by an organisation or peak body. This includes structured or formal activities such as club sports, competitions, and school sports.

What is the difference between the Recreation Strategy and the Open Space Strategy?

The Open Space Strategy that is currently being developed will focus on the open spaces needed to be active in Manningham, where are they located, what do they look like and how they are planned and managed.

The Recreation Strategy will guide how our community access, participate in and benefit from recreation, sport and leisure opportunities.

What are the benefits of physical activity?

Physical activity plays an important role in supporting a healthy community. Regular participation in physical activity improves physical and mental health, strengthens social connections and contributes to an overall better quality of life.

The benefits of physical activity extend beyond individual wellbeing. Active communities help create vibrant public spaces, support local clubs and organisations, encourage active and sustainable transport, and foster a stronger sense of belonging. Investing in opportunities for physical activity can also reduce pressure on health services, improve community resilience and make neighbourhoods more liveable and inclusive.

Why are we asking for feedback?

We want to ensure we continue to meet the changing needs of the community now and into the future. By sharing your feedback, you’ll help us understand the key issues and challenges people experience in participating in physical activity, particularly the barriers that prevent people from being as active as they would like. Your Input will help us understand which facilities and programs people value most and what improvements are needed.
