Manna Gum playspace is a destination playground in Doncaster East located along the Mullum Mullum Trail. It also features a shelter, picnic tables and bike repair station.

What is happening?

We’re improving Manna Gum playspace as part of our Parks Improvement Program. The project will be delivered under our 2025/26 Open Space Capital Works Program.

The proposed improvements include:

  • upgrade and replacement of play equipment
  • increased nature play opportunities
  • improvements to the access path within the playspace
  • new tree and garden bed planting

Where is it?

Manna Gum playspace is located on Heidelberg-Warrandyte Road in Doncaster East.

Why is it needed?

We’re making improvements to this playspace due to its age and condition, and to ensure it meets the community’s needs both now and for years to come.

When is it happening?

Community consultation for the Manna Gum playground upgrade concept plan closed on 7 April 2025. Community feedback will now be collated to help inform the final design. We anticipate the final design will be ready in July 2025.

Construction is planned to commence in mid-September 2025, subject to weather and contractor availability.

How will the works affect me?

The playspace will be closed during construction. Nearby playgrounds include:

  • Lyndal Reserve: Lyndal close, Doncaster East (560 metres away)
  • Fernlea Reserve: Fernlea Crescent, Doncaster East (1100 metres away)

We will make every effort to minimise any disruption to residents and visitors.

A significant majority (78%) of survey participants were either supportive or very supportive of the overall draft concept.

    What you liked:

    • Expanded play opportunities and greater integration of nature play elements.
    • New features, like the basket swing, upgraded climbing unit, water pump and the updated dry creek bed.
    • Improved access, particularly the introduction of a pram-friendly pathway.
    • Comfort features, like shaded areas and seating.
    • Additional greenery and planting.

Your suggestions for improving the playspace:

    • Additional shade options.
    • Additional play options for older children.
    • Themed playground (to make the space even more engaging).

You also suggested some additional playspace features, such as a BBQ area, toilets, full basketball court, in-ground trampoline and overhead glider. However, due to site constraints and budget limitations, we unfortunately cannot pursue these ideas further.

    What’s next?

We’ll update the concept design based on your initial feedback and share it with you for further consultation from 17 March to 7 April 2025.

Feedback gathered during this consultation will help inform the final design for the playspace.
