How will the system work?

Storm water will primarily be harvested from a 35 hectare catchment on the east side of Bulleen Road north/east of the crown land site. The water will be treated at the crown land site via a gross pollutant trap system and wetland, then pumped to the storage tanks at Bulleen Park and the storage lake at the golf course.

Irrigation water supply can also be supplemented by extraction of water from the Yarra River from the existing pumping station within the golf course, but to a much reduced extent when compared with the current practice. A distribution pipeline will be constructed from the Yarra River to the Golf Course storage to supplement flows harvested from the local catchment.

How will the project environmental impacts be managed?

While every effort has been made to minimise tree losses, the proposed works also involve the removal of several trees and revegetation works. On balance, the project offers significant environmental benefits arising from improved river water quality, reduced reliance on potable water supplies and reduction in demand for extraction of water from the Yarra River.

What are the benefits of the project?

The project aims and benefits include:

    • A “Whole of Water Cycle” management approach, in line with Local, State and Federal Government strategic objectives
    • Reuse and recycling of storm water and reduction of potable water consumption
    • Improvements to Yarra River water quality by reducing pollutant loads and nitrogen entering the Yarra River, and Port Philip Bay by 124kg/annum
    • Ensuring sustainable environmental flows to the Yarra River by reducing extraction demand
    • Providing local catchment flood mitigation in the lower reaches of this catchment, benefiting Bulleen Road and Trinity Grammar; and
    •  Improving the aesthetics of the crown land site.

What is the project cost and how is it being funded?

The project budget is $2.8 million and is being funded jointly by the benefiting project partners, which include Manningham Council, the City of Boroondara and Carey Baptist Grammar.

The project has been assisted by the Victorian Government through Melbourne Water Corporation as part of the Living Rivers Storm Water Program and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

The project has also been assisted with funding from the Federal Government.

How is the project being managed?

Manningham Council has taken a lead role in the development of this project, facilitating the design and documentation of the project, obtaining all the necessary approvals and facilitating funding agreements from the various state and federal agencies and from the project partners and has been appointed the construction authority for the project.

At the completion of the project, Manningham Council will operate the facility on behalf of the project partners, in accordance with the terms of the project partner’s agreement.

Has a contractor been appointed to undertake the works and who is the contact?

“Landscape Solutions Pty Ltd” has been appointed to construct the facility and works are scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2017.

The contractors contact during construction is Ky McKimmie on 0413 268 827.

    What is the project timeline?

    The stages of work include:-

    1.  Construct storage facility at the Bolin Bolin site   Dec 2016 – Feb 2017

    2.  Construct pipeline to Bulleen Park  Feb 2017 – March 2017

    3.  Construct storage tanks at Bulleen Park  Feb 2017 – March 2017

    4.  Construct pipe line to Golf Course  Feb 2017 – March 2017

    5.  Construct pipeline to Yarra River  April 2017 – June 2017

    6.  Construct storage - Freeway Golf Course  April 2017 – August 2017

    Public Access to the Site

Access to Carey Baptist Grammar, Bulleen Park and the Freeway Golf Course will be unaffected for most of the duration of the works. There will be some minor periodic disruption to traffic on Bulleen Road but every effort will be made to ensure that these impacts are limited to out of peak periods.

Areas of the sites subject to construction will be secured where necessary and feasible, to ensure public safety. There will be minimal disruption to activities at Bulleen Park for the duration of the works. Works at the Freeway Golf Course will be limited to the period between April and August 2017.

How can I obtain further information?
