What is a recreational bike facility?

A recreational bike facility accommodates recreational cycling, such as BMX and mountain bike riding. There are many types of recreational bike facilities that exist, such as pump tracks, dirt jumps, flow trails, mountain bike trails and bike playgrounds.

They provide all members of the community with the opportunity to enjoy the social, physical and mental health benefits of cycling.

These facilities are different to bike trails, such as the Main Yarra Trail or on road bike lanes.

What new recreational bike facilities is Council proposing?

We’re proposing a diverse range of cycling facilities across Manningham. These aim to support our riding community and encourage other members of our community to try riding and build up their skills and confidence.

You can find out more about each type of facility in the draft Recreational Bike Facilities Plan

Why are you proposing recreational cycling facilities in Manningham?

We receive regular community requests for these type of bike facilities. During COVID there was a proliferation of illegal dirt jumps in sensitive bushland areas. When we consulted on the Blackburn dirt jumps, we made a commitment  to create purpose built facilities when we had to remove the jumps. This work is also an action of the Sport Facility Development Plan 2021 which focuses on increasing participation, improving user experience in sport and recreation, and addresses the growing demand for a variety of bike riding facilities.

Where are you planning to put the new recreational bike facilities?

Eight sites have been identified and evaluated for potential bike facilities. These include:

    1. Fitzsimons Reserve, Templestowe
    2. Jenkins Park, Templestowe
    3. Katrina Gully, Doncaster
    4. Morris Williams Reserve, Bulleen
    5. St Clems Reserve, Doncaster East
    6. Stintons Reserve, Park Orchards
    7. Wonga Park Reserve, Wonga Park
    8. Zerbes Reserve, Doncaster East

You can find out more about what we are proposing at each site from the map or in the draft Recreational Bike Facilities Plan.

When are you planning to start the works?

We’re planning to build these facilities over the next 10 years.

If the draft Recreational Bike Facilities Plan is endorsed by Council, we will start the construction of the first site in the 2025/26 financial year. We will plan to build a new facility in each year following.

We will apply for funds as part of the annual Council budget process and all works are subject to funding approval.

We will also coordinate further site investigations and run a community consultation process for each site as we deliver the work, so you can review the proposals before we start designing and building.

How much park space would be changed to accommodate the proposed bike facilities?

We have nominated a footprint for each site that can be viewed from the links under the map or in the draft Recreational Bike Facilities Plan.
