What facilities will be included?

When we asked our community what mattered most, they highlighted 3 key priorities: an improved café space, enhanced water play and dedicated space for school carnivals. These priorities helped shape the design, alongside broader improvements.

The new outdoor area will include:

    • a new 8-lane 50-metre outdoor pool with an accessible ramp and a flexible swim wall, allowing lane lengths to be adjusted between 25 and 50 metres
    • a family zone with water play splash pad with slides, tipping bucket and interactive features and a toddler pool
    • tiered spectator seating to better support schools and clubs during school carnivals and swim events
    • new change block with outdoor toilets and change rooms
    • more sun-smart shading throughout the site
    • a new and improved café with expanded indoor and outdoor dining areas and access from the indoor pool hall
    • new BBQs and landscaping aligned with the ‘Your Backyard’ theme of the project
    • replacement of existing gas boilers with energy‑efficient electric systems to future‑proof the facility and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

How are you improving the cafe?

Improving the cafe area was the top priority identified through community consultation. The existing café is located at the back of the centre and is small, with limited visibility and connection to indoor spaces.

To address this, we're relocating the café to better connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. The new café will feature 3 dining areas across indoor and outdoor spaces, with seating overlooking the indoor pool hall and outdoor facilities to create a more welcoming and connected place for people to meet, relax and socialise.

How are you improving the grass embankment next to the 50-metre pool?

We’ve seen growing demand for this area to support swimming events, school carnivals and everyday recreational use. In response, we’re enhancing the space with tiered seating levels, ramp access, improved landscaping and additional shade to make it more comfortable year-round.

New umbrellas will provide sun protection for the tiered seating, while a new access ramp will make the space more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

How are you improving the 50-metre pool?

The 50-metre outdoor pool, originally built over 56 years ago around the time of the Melbourne Olympics, has reached the end of its useful life.

We’re replacing it with a new 50-metre pool featuring an accessible ramp and a flexible swim wall, allowing the pool to operate in both 50-metre and 25-metre lane formats. The pool will include 8 lanes and range from 1.1m to 1.8m in depth. This upgrade will ensure the pool better meets the needs of our community now and into the future.

What's happening to the diving pool?

The diving pool area will be decommissioned and built over with a new amenities block with toilets and group and family change facilities. A dedicated marshalling area will also be provided for school carnivals, and space for essential plant and equipment supporting the new pool.

Over time, the diving pool has deteriorated and is no longer well‑used. Given the low demand and high costs of replacing and maintaining ageing infrastructure, we’re focusing on delivering modern, inclusive facilities to better meet the needs of our community.

What sustainability features will be included?

Sustainability is a key focus of the redevelopment, with several environmentally friendly design features being incorporated, including:

    • Replacing gas boilers with energy-efficient electric systems to future-proof the facility and help meet emissions targets.
    • Installing energy-saving LED lighting.
    • Rainwater tanks.
    • Expanding and enhancing landscaping to enhance the natural environment and biodiversity.

How will the upgrades improve accessibility?

The new outdoor area has been designed with accessibility in mind, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the space. Key features will include:

    • ramp access into the new 50-metre pool and the new water play area
    • a ramp leading to the tiered grass seating area
    • accessible outdoor toilets and change rooms
    • inclusive signage with icons and translated information
    • additional features, such as automatic sliding doors, accessible pathways and ramps throughout the site.
