Why is the redevelopment needed?

The outdoor area at Aquarena was first built in 1969, and despite regular maintenance, it has reached the end of its lifespan and requires a total refresh.

With over one million visits each year, it is important that the centre can continue to provide top-quality facilities that meet the evolving needs of our diverse community.

This project aims to create a vibrant, inclusive space that promotes fitness, social connection, and a strong sense of belonging, ensuring everyone can enjoy it for many years to come.

When will the new outdoor area be built?

Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2026, following the summer season. It will take approximately 15 months to complete, aiming to open for summer 2027-2028. This timeline is designed to limit the outdoor area’s closure to just one summer.

How will you fund the redevelopment?

We’re funding this project through our Capital Works Program.

To support this, we’re advocating to both the state and federal government to provide $15 million of funding. This will help us to manage the increasing costs of construction.

Who will design and build the new space?

Co-op Studio, our contracted architects, are leading the design of the new outdoor area. This team is experienced in the design of major sports, aquatic, and leisure destinations. A public tender process to appoint a construction contractor is planned for mid-2025.
