What is the ‘Your Backyard’ theme of the project about?

’Your Backyard’ emerged as a theme for the project based on feedback gathered from the Aquarena Outdoor Masterplan – endorsed by Council in August 2023. ‘Your Backyard’ focuses on Aquarena being a welcoming, fun, accessible and safe facility for the community.

Why is this redevelopment necessary now?

The 50m outdoor pool was originally built in 1969 after the Melbourne Olympics and has reached the end of its useful life after 56 years.

Redeveloping Aquarena gives us the opportunity to replace outdated systems with modern, sustainable and efficient design, improve accessibility, and create facilities that better support our growing community. The upgrade will also bring broader benefits, including increased visitation, more opportunities for young people to work as lifeguards, and new spaces for people to connect and enjoy.

The redevelopment will also create more places for people to relax, socialise and connect including improved spectator seating for swim events, a larger café with expanded dining areas, and more open spaces for picnicking.

    How long will construction take?

Construction will start in April 2026 and is expected to take approximately 19 months to complete, subject to unforeseen delays. We will keep the community informed of construction updates and more specific timelines as the project progresses.

Will Aquarena have to close during construction?

The main indoor centre will remain open throughout the works to continue to provide a range of indoor aquatic and leisure activities for the community.  However the outdoor area, including the 50m pool, waterslides, pavilion, occasional care service and cafe will be closed for the duration of construction.

We’re working closely with the contractor to minimise disruption to patrons. We’ll make sure the community is notified ahead of any changes or temporary closures.

Will the outdoor pools and waterslides be closed over summer?

Yes, the outdoor areas will need to close over summer as part of the construction program to ensure everyone’s safety and to allow works to proceed. The main indoor centre will remain open to help you stay active and connected throughout the construction period.

How is the project being funded?

The project is funded through our Capital Works Program, with a contribution from the Victorian Government. We’re continuing to actively advocate for additional State and Federal Government funding to help deliver the full scope of works.

Is this project at risk of cost overruns?

The project has been carefully planned and costed, with contingencies built into the budget to manage unforeseen costs. We have selected a contractor through a competitive tender process, locked in clear contract arrangements and established robust financial oversight and reporting. Any material changes to project costs will be reported transparently.

What service alternatives will be available during closures?

During construction, Aquarena’s main indoor centre will remain open and continue to offer a wide range of indoor aquatic, leisure and fitness activities for the community.

Will there be noise or disruption for nearby residents?

Some noise and increased activity are expected during construction. All works will be carried out in accordance with approved construction hours and relevant regulations, with higher‑impact activities scheduled to minimise disruption where possible.

Nearby residents will be kept informed ahead of key construction stages, and Council will work closely with the contractor to manage impacts and respond to enquiries or concerns as they arise.
